Art After 5

What: Diverse jazz and world music artists perform this spring in Art After 5 at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Each Friday evening, the Museum’s Great Stair Hall becomes a concert hall, complete with cocktails, elegant café-style appetizers, and desserts. Art After 5 features emerging and established jazz performers, with forays on the first Friday of each month into other musical genres. Between sets visitors have a chance to explore the Museum’s galleries and special exhibitions. On this Friday, Stephanie Nakasian will call to mind Ella Fitzgerald with her sensous jazz vocals.

Bicycle Film Festival

What: Celebrate the increasingly popular, ever hip mode of transport you've grown up on: the bike! Opening Reception 6pm-8pm with BMX demo and showing of Ryan Humphrey's "Fast Forward." Screening program at 8 pm featuring the Philly premier of "I Love My Bicycle: The History of FBM Bikes" directed by Philadelphia native Joe Stakun. And hit the afterparty at National Mechanics (22nd South 3rd Street) from 10-2 am!

Challenge 3

What: In its third exhibition of Fleisher Art Memorial's Wind Challenge series, Challenge 3 showcases the work of three talented artists. Johanna Inman will be showing old photographs focusing on disregarded books and highlighting the subtleties of time and decomposition; Yvonne Lung will show a video installation based on stories told to her by Chinese immigrants and Constantina Zavitsanos will be showing unique, engaging sculptures. Gallery hours are 11AM - 5PM.

Dancin' in the Streets

What: Been tested lately? If you have, celebrate. If you haven't, get tested for free at Dancin' in the Streets, and then celebrate life and awareness with DJs Rich Medina and Mike Nyce spinning afrobeat, house and funk beats and classics. There will be live art and dance performances all night, compelling you to put on a little performance of your own. Hosted by Ethel Cee and Oronde.

East Asian Art

What: This two part exhibit highlights similar art themes across neighboring cultures. The first part features Korean screen paintings with notable Chinese narratives like General Guo Ziyi’s Banquet and the Hundred Children. These images are presented alongside Chinese ceramics of the Qing dynasty (1616–1912).

Philadelphia Independent Film Festival

What: The 2nd annual Philadelphia Independent Film Festival returns to the Northern Liberties for another year of cinematic magic. Going on Thursday June 25-Sunday June 28, this four-day event will showcase the work of filmmakers citywide and worldwide, featuring an incredible range of discussions, panels, and meet & greets. Opening night, June 25th, celebrations go down at NorthBowl Lounge 'n' Lanes for an extravaganza including bowling, hors d’oeuvres, 2 drink tickets, raffle, and entry for prize drawings all for a $30 admission fee.

What: Multiple Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Spring Awakening comes to Philadelphia. Duncan Sheik (we all remember radio hit "Barely Breathing") wrote all of the music, giving the musical a folky/alternative rock feel, as it explores teenage sexuality and the transition to adulthood in late 19th century Germany.
