By Brittney Barrett

In an age where Britney Spears gets mixed by the same guy as M.I.A., and T.I. uses the same production effects as '90s era Cher, genre boundaries have become increasingly elusive. Pop, rap, shoe gaze and electronica are morphing into a single beautiful beast and it takes little more than a listen to Telepathe's first full length album to realize that it can be a very, very good thing. Shimmering, synth-heavy electronica laced with crystalline guitars, killer drum beats and a smattering of tribal sounds -- Telepathe knock down walls that would seem too imposing for two Brooklyn girls without a single record to their name prior to the release of Dance Mother. Fusing hip-hop beats with twitching synthesizers and their haunting, breathy vocals the girl/girl duo pose an important generational question: "Why can't we have it all, and have it all at the same time?"  And when they sound in with ass-shaking bass-line and frilly synths, they answer it too. We can. With the help of TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek and through the juxtaposition of unlike, even clashing elements, Dance Mother simultaneously possess the primal allure of hip-hop and the pleasant gentility of indie-pop. There may be no better example of this than "Lights Go Down," which employs traipsing arabic melodies and half-spoken lyrical delivery to be in two musical places at once. Elsewhere, like on "Devil's Trident," hazy chanting and lap-top beats manage to seamlessly combine cult-creepiness and expanding hip-hop beats. Telepathe in its uniquely schitzophrenic way serves as an accurate and hook-laden reflection of the generation Y ethos. (IAMSOUND)
