Rip! A Remix Manifesto

By Quentin Williams

A kind of stick-it-to-the-man documentary, director Brett Gaylord weaves a comprehensive history of copyright law while highlighting the irony behind America’s current policies on music pirating. The doc begins with the beer-drinking performance prep of DJ Girl Talk, one of America’s dopest DJs, known for creating ill remixes from content of other artist songs or beats. The film continues on to create a fresh, surprisingly entertaining approach to an issue that impacts the whole of the internet generation. Gaylord combines music video editing techniques with traditional documentary formatting to offer an intriguing and informative perspective on the origins of intellectual property and copyright laws. Using the creative, dance-inciting remixes of Girl Talk as the center piece to illustrate his argument, Gaylord takes the potentially dry topic of copyright law and transforms it into a singularly captivating piece -- questioning the legitimacy of America’s current legislation pertaining to the issue. The film offers a empowering representation of the issue, complete with irony and humor, not only offering in-depth analysis but also issuing a challenge to imagine a world where ideas and creativity are shared freely.

A DVD on remixing wouldn’t be complete without a remix of its own. The extras consist of different parts of the documentary that have been edited and remixed by viewers via the site opensourcecinema.org. Some of these clips are purely creative while others are funny montages that have garnered a heap of hits on YouTube.
