Florida’s Black Kids may be the most buzzed about indie band of 2008, and for good reason. Their demo EP, Wizard of Ahhhs was a stellar introduction, although the production was a bit hazy, the songs were memorable and well-crafted. Now the band has returned with Suede’s Bernard Butler on production, and their debut album, Partie Traumatic. With Butler’s help, the band have dressed up those earlier demos in hi-fi style, and have written new songs including a brilliant, electro-stomper entitled “Listen to Your Body Tonight” and the sure to be future hit single “I’m Making Eyes at You,” which mixes "Boys Don’t Cry" atmospherics with a chorus that would make Molly Ringwald blush. However, it’s not all pretty in pink, the album does have some stinkers, such as the awkwardly metaphorical “I Wanna Be Your Limousine” and clichéd “Look At Me (When I Rock Wichoo).” Overall, Partie Traumatic is a fun party record, which, for the most part, carries emotional depth. Musically, the band is no longer painting in black and white, opting for a wide-array of colors. (Columbia/Almost Gold)
