By John Mariano
Ah yes, another year, another Parts & Labor album. If you've heard either of their last two albums, Stay Afraid or Mapmaker then you probably have a good idea of what to expect this go around: a wave of feedback and synthesizers over persistent drums and U2 type choruses. They do manage to expand on their already massive sound by adding a second guitar player and new drummer this time out. And yet there's something missing. For all the beautiful chaos on "Wedding in a Wasteland" and first single "Nowheres Nigh," they never manage to achieve the triumphant highs of Mapmaker or the raw intensity of Stay Afraid. It may be that we've danced this dance before, or that this album is a little too laid back for their sound or the album's concept (struggling to keep up with our ever expanding technological world). Despite these setbacks though, this is by no means a bad album. It's actually quite good in fact, just a bit too familiar. If that's not a problem for you, feel free to plug in, crank it up and enjoy the kaleidoscope of sounds to be discovered on one of the better noise albums this year. Sure to be a hit with heady stoners and noise fanatics everywhere. (Jagjaguwar)
