I know what you're thinking. Bears are great. They're cute, furry, and full of mischief. Think of all the great bears throughout history: The Bearinstein Bears, BJ and the Bear, Grizzly Adams. But not all bears are awesome. Some are somber, introspective, and completely redundant. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing. At times, Bears show glimpses of inspiration similar to indie pop bands like Slow Reader, The Dears, and Los Campesinos. But, too often they come offsounding like the The Shins Lite. Tingly keyboards, hand claps, and deep feelings are the order of the day with these guys. On album opener "Please Don't," they plead: "Please don't worry, I'll be fine," over something that sounds like an indie version of Matchbox Twenty. You get the idea. Album closer "Our Time" is probably their most satisfying listen here. Strumming guitars and hand claps push along a happy little Kinks melody. It's nothing new to be sure, but at least you can dance to it. Don't think this all means you shouldn't give these Cleveland boys a chance. Just don't be surprised if you forget about them the moment you stop listening. (Bears Pop)
